"We are almost there, Captain!!"
The Sargent announced
"By your estimate, how much further, Sargent?"
The Captain enquired
Scratching his head and taking a look at his instruments, the Sargent replied
"We have already crossed the river Tuli into Matabeleland and travelled 650 kilometres ... I would say another 15 kilometres and we will be there ..."
The Captain nodded and said
"In that case, let's camp here for the night.
The men and women are worn out.
We are doing good time ... ahead of schedule ... so we can afford to put up here for a day or two to rest."
"Aai ... aai ... Captain !!"
The Sargent responded and signalled for the ox-driven wagon trail to come to a halt.
Men, women and children slumped to the ground in exhaustion.
They had either been riding in the ox-driven wagons or walking for thousands of miles for months!
The wagons weren't the most comfortable of rides!!
Their bodies ached
Their dusty faces and feet spoke of the ordeal they had been under.
The livestock were just as exhausted.
A young Zulu man from Durban, South Africa, of about 16 was among this tired group of men, women and children.
He and his travel mates had just landed in a strange and far away land called Southern Rhodesia.
The year was 1890.
They were on a quest to seek 'greener' pastures.
There is a popular saying that goes 'The grass is always greener on the neighbour's side'
But isn't a more befitting term more like 'The grass is always greener where you water it?'
